Have you read that many self help books about ‘finding your passion’, that you’re actually STRESSED about finding your passion?
Where's my passion gone? I swear I left it right here next to my car keys..
The Two P’s – Purpose & Passion – have been buzzwords for the last decade.
It’s become fashionable to be able to swan into a room and declare “I’m so on PURPOSE right now”.
And for every person that is living their life beautifully on purpose, there’s a line up of people in the shadows who feel inadequate because they aren’t.
I’ve lost count at the many books I’ve read about incredibly inspiring people who preach about the importance of finding your purpose in order to live a life you truly love.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE those books – they're my favourite kind. (Actually, that’s a lie. They come second to my beloved Buffy book collection – but more on that another day).
I vibe from reading about others' passions, and how they found their purpose, and how they meshed the two together and BOOM – now they are living their dream life and making a pile of cash while doing so.
Believe me when I say that I’ve consumed dozens of books all dedicated to the pursuit of passion and finding your purpose.
FIND YOUR PASSION…
….. they yell at me with their judge-y capital letters.
Live your life on purpose!
….they tell me in bold.
I’d think to myself, “Well, I’m trying”.
And for the vast majority of us, it’s really not that simple.
It really isn’t.
Sometimes, I discovered that I actually felt WORSE about myself after reading the very books that were supposed to help me feel better and find my why in life.
I’m the first to admit that I’ve felt guilty that maybe I’m not living my purpose.
Which I know seems totally bogus because I run my own business.
Why wouldn’t I be on purpose right?
That’s the million dollar question I asked myself too!
Eventually though, I came to relax and accept that the frustration I was feeling was born from the fact that it just wasn’t my time to discover exactly what my passion was…. yet.
And here’s the major takeaway from my minor freakout when I was figuring this out:
Your passion isn’t playing a game of ‘Hide & Seek’ with you.
It’s not hiding under a rock.
It’s within you and unless you try multiple things, it isn’t being gift wrapped and delivered to you with a card attached that says, “ENCLOSED IS YOUR PASSION – USE ME”.
So, I’m here to tell you, it’s okay.
It’s okay to feel like you don’t know what your passion or purpose is.
It’s okay to feel average.
Average doesn’t mean failure. Average doesn’t mean unworthy.
Sometimes, average means you're figuring it out.
You’re searching. You’re seeking. You’re hunting.
And that’s okay.
Relax the pressure on yourself.
Put down the books for a while and just live your life.
Trust me. It will come.
It’s always when you’re not looking that you find the one.
